CBD for Parkinson: Optimistic Evidence
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, affecting the body as it progresses slowly over time. There are various treatments that have been suggested in dealing with Parkinson symptoms. Therapeutic cannabis is a new approach, aiming at overcoming the difficulties of such a chronic disease.
Continuous Research on CBD against Parkinson
Parkinson’s disease (PD) has a progressive course and is characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Although no neuroprotective treatments for PD have been found to date, the endocannabinoid system has emerged as a promising target.
According to a recent study, CBD has been shown to provide neuroprotection against 6-hydroxydopamine toxicity, both in vivo and in vitro. Therapeutic cannabis can work wonders against oxidative stress, which is caused by free radicals. Through the reduction of these free radicals, the effects of Parkinson’s disease are reported to become milder.
Another way in which CBD may help Parkinson patients is through the improvement of complex sleep. As it turns out after initial testing, therapeutic cannabis can benefit those experiencing REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). This is a type of insomnia, or better yet parasomnia. As a result of RBD, patients experience restless sleep and often suffer from nightmares and the inability to control their muscle activity. When using cannabinoids, this problem is dealt with effectively.
Finally, research has indicated that CBD may be beneficial in delaying the progression of degenerative disorders. This term does not only cover Parkinson’s disease, but also Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s. Further investigation is of course required, although the findings are nothing short of spectacular.

Findings point to a possible effect of CBD in improving quality of life measures in PD patients with no psychiatric comorbidities; however, studies with larger samples and specific objectives are required before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
